The Fernandes' chose one of the designs and their home will be featured in the spring Remodeler's Showcase, highlighting the design by architecht Rick Lundin and the remodeling work of AMEK Custom Builders.

The master bedroom and bathroom suite addition encompasses an entire new, third floor built up on half of the existing split-level footprint. The addition includes a unique bathroom, closet connection described as extremely functional and useful by Matt Schmidt, co-owner of AMEK Custom Builders.

He expects that the design will become increasingly popular in master bedroom and bathroom remodeling projects and it will be featured during the Remodeler's Showcase.

The design has a shower that opens on two sides, one into the bathroom with its sink, bathtub and enclosed toilet. The other side opens up into a walk-in closet that is also connected to the family's bedroom.

This unique design provides a circular traffic flow between the bedroom, bathroom/shower and closet.

The new staircase utilized the existing split-level stairwell footprint to create a staircase that turns 180 degrees on a landing after the first few steps, with the rest of the stairs going up into the master suite addition.

The stairs were made from the same Comaru wood used in the main floor living area floor and the new master bedroom.

A trio of small, square windows were added vertically to the home's front to provide natural light to the staircase, with more natural light from a skylight at the top of the stairs.

The master bedroom includes:

  • Cumaro wood floors that are consistent with flooring in the main level and stairway.
  • Sliding glass doors leading out to a new, small, master bedroom deck providing a view of the lake.
  • Several windows on the other walls that face the outside.
  • Two skylights providing natural light to the master bedroom and staircase.

The master bathroom includes:

  • Flooring of marble tile.
  • Marble tiles were crumbled into small chunks and used as an inlay for the shower floor.
  • Bathroom walls of onyx tile.
  • The shower has glass doors on two sides, a window and onyx tile on the other two.
  • Sconces providing lighting at the sink.

The exterior renovation includes:

  • Adding Apex fiberglass siding to the entire two-story garage.
  • Adding Apex fiberglass siding with a mix of James Hardie fiber cement panels to the home's main exterior.

The home will be featured in the 2012 Spring Remodelers Showcase. The number of this home on the tour hasn't been assigned. Check back to our website or follow us on Facebook to learn the number and location.
